Hi everyone (: I've been asking the students to bring in 30 pencils per student for weeks. I've also been asking them to bring in one pencil sharpener each. Several students have not responded to this assignment. If you can't bring in pencils for some reason, all that I ask is a quick note from your parents saying that you can't bring them in yet.

First of all I'd like to give a hardy thank you to all who have brought in pencils and pencil sharpeners. Can I say however that many pencils are not good for sharpening. After they become dull the first time, they are sharpened down to nothing. This is partly because they are low quality pencils and partly because our pencil sharpeners are lower quality. Our classroom could really use a high class heavy duty electric pencil sharpener. I've brought in 2 myself, but both have been broken by students. The lower quality pencil sharpener I have now may not be used by students. I sharpen their pencil for them, but it doesn't work that well. If someone volunteers to bring in a heavy duty high class pencil sharpener, I will be the only one to use it, but I will sharpen student's pencils for them. If you bring in hand sharpeners, you can keep them at your desk. As far as pencils go, I have had the best luck with papermate, office max, and ticonderoga brands. You might want to test out your pencils and sharpener before buying a large number. I know that none of us were aware that some of these pencils and sharpeners just wouldn't cut it. My grateful thanks for all your hard work.

Good afternoon! Monday will begin our government testing (the Stanford 10). I've tried to express the importance of trying hard on the test, while keeping in balance the need to relax. Our children are well prepared. If they behave and try hard, they will do very well.

We need healthy snacks! Please volunteer to bring healthy snacks for the class on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday. If you can, bring them every one of these days. Shoot for a 10-20 minute block of time.

Next week is not only Love of Reading Week, it is also the 2nd grade science fair. Start thinking of a science project that you'd be interested in doing. You should pick it out by Monday, but a written explanation for my approval is due no later than Wednesday. This written explanation must have your parent or guardian's signature to count for credit. It should include your purpose and proposed places to research as well as your proposed experiment (see below).

The project is due on Thursday. Presentations will run Thursday and Friday. 2 letters have already been sent home about this. We've talked about lots of science project examples in class. Your first order of business is to come up with a question about the world that you do not know the answer to (purpose). You will be required to research in order to find an answer.

If you can't find an answer, you will be required to guess an answer (hypothesis). You will also be required to run an experiment to find out your answer.

Take the information you get from your research and/or your experiment, and organize it using a pictograph, a line graph, a bar graph, a pie graph, a chart, or some other kind of clear presentation (analysis). Write a 1 paragraph conclusion telling the class what you learned about the answer to your question.

It would be a good idea to start this weekend. Waiting until Wednesday to get your project written down for approval gives you little time to do a good job. I plan to let you pick almost anything you want within the realm of science, but you must get my approval. Volcanoes, live animals in class, or dangerous experiments may or may not be approved.

In it they should have answered these four questions about the actions of students in class: What is an action you don't like (don't use names)? What is something you can do to improve? What is something that another student in class does well (please use another student's name)? What is something that you do well? Please help your student if they don't quite have the idea. Thanks!

If your student has been consistent in turning in a reading log of 70 minutes or more per week, I also sent them home with a coupon for a free one topping personal pan pizza. Good job readers!

When you're out in the world with your children, ask them to look for contractions. They should be able to tell you what words those contractions were made from. You could compete for the most contractions found in a day. Have fun!

I have decided to extend the due date on spelling sentences. Each Monday, writing each spelling word in a sentence will be due on Friday. The reading log is also always due on Friday. Every other assignment is due the following school day, unless otherwise noted. Tuesday's assignment, due Wednesday is: Saxon Math's Lesson Worksheet 30-1a and 30-1b. The worksheet requests that parents keep it, so please write me a one line note letting me know that your child completed the work at home. Please let your children make mistakes on the homework. After they make mistakes, it is greatly appreciated if you teach them at home, and let them correct the errors. Thanks for this and all the other wonderful things you as parents and students do!

Homework comes home almost EVERY Monday through Thursday. With no exceptions, the reading log should be turned in at the end of each school week (usually a Friday) with 70 minutes of reading logged. On occasion, I will not give homework on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. This is usually because of a nearby holiday or school function. So far this has only happened once for Open House. I will also not be giving homework this Thursday, October 8th, 40th Day. As a school and as a teacher we are giving all the incentives we can for students to show up on this incredibly important funding day. Each student can earn thousands for the school by showing up this one day! We are having field activities, a movie, cotton candy or popcorn, soda, free pajama dress down, free snow cones, a purchase only pizza and cookie lunch, a read-in, and more! For a trial period, I will be posting nightly homework:

Every Monday, unless otherwise noted, the homework is to write each spelling word in a sentence. Tuesday's homework to be posted next.

We had a wonderful lesson on germs! Three Air Force volunteers from the Davis-Monthan clinic helped the students to simulate seeing germs on their hands under a black light. Proactive health practices including handwashing was taught and discussed. Finally, the children were tested for hand washing success.

Please ask your children to leave home materials they won't need at school. We've had many toys confiscated. Electronics have been taken away, and some items have been stolen. If you or your child would like an item back, please come in or write a note for your child. All left-over confiscated items will be donated up to twice a quarter.

I would love some parent volunteers! Maybe you've asked me and I forgot to get back to you. More likely, you haven't been able to volunteer yet, but I would love to schedule a time with you.

Thank you for all you do for the school and especially for your students! I personally know that many of you make sure your child is doing homework four days a week. I know you help them correct it after they try on their own. I know that you encourage them to read 70 minutes and sometimes much more every week. I know that you encourage, sometimes in incredibly creative ways, teriffic character!

I have been SO impressed by all the caring acts I see on a regular basis in our classroom. Students pick up after each other, share, give up turns, encourage good behavior, compliment each other, and so much more every day!

Welcome to Mr. Eli's Blog!

While homework usually comes home Monday through Thursday, I usually don't give homework on special days such as Open House or before a school holiday.

Don't forget that on Labor Day (September 7th), there is no school.

This month, the character trait we are focusing on is trustworthiness. Please talk with your child about this important trait. All year long, Mr. Eli's class will be emphasizing the importance of caring. I've seen student show trustworthiness multiple times this year. Found money has been returned. Honesty about inappropriate behavior has been seen. Students have given up turns to others who needed them more urgently. Homework has been turned in. The list goes on. I also consider these to be caring acts. When students study their hardest, they show care for themselves. When students help others in their group or quiet down to listen during another's turn, they show care for one another. This September, I will get to pick one (only one unfortunately) student to join the principal for a special Character Lunch in October. It will be difficult I'm sure, and I'll have to draw sticks between a number of excellent candidates.

Don't forget to check out my newsletter. Last week, the computers all across La Paloma Lakeside went down, but I'm sending one home September 4th.

As with paperwork sent out by the school, if your child finds errors in convention while reading my blog, have them note the errors on paper and turn them in to me the following day for extra credit. We all make mistayks.
